How Are Epidural Injections Performed?
Prior to the procedure, your treatment area is thoroughly cleaned and prepped, and a local anesthetic is applied to minimize discomfort. Under live fluoroscopic (X-ray) guidance, Dr. Stieber carefully inserts a fine needle into the epidural space—the area just outside the dural sac that contains your spinal fluid and nerve roots. Contrast dye may be injected to confirm accurate placement. Once the needle is in position, a measured dose of corticosteroid is slowly injected, diluting inflammation and alleviating nerve compression. The entire process typically takes between 30 to 45 minutes, after which you are monitored briefly before being discharged home, often on the same day.
