C5-6 Anterior Discectomy & ADR

History

Elizabeth struggled with neck pain and left upper extremity pain, tingling, numbness, and weakness for over a year to the point that her pain and nerve symptoms were interfering with her daily activities and quality of life.

She had unsuccessfully tried to treat her symptoms and pain with non-operative treatment including medications, chiropractic manipulation, acupuncture, formal physical therapy and a cervical epidural steroid injection. An accomplished equestrian, she found it difficult or impossible to ride without pain and discomfort.

Examination & Treatment

She was diagnosed with a left-sided C5-6 disc herniation compressing her exiting C6 nerve root (pinched nerve), resulting in a left C6 radiculopathy.

She underwent a C5-6 Anterior Discectomy and Artificial Disc Replacement (ADR), removing the herniated disc, unpinching her nerve.

Outcome

At four months out from surgery, she was able to get back on her horse and return to the riding she loves!
