Sarah is a 44yo massage therapist and mother who presented with severe and worsening of neck pain and right upper extremity neurologic pain, numbness, tingling, and weakness of her right triceps muscle and wrist. She found herself unable to work with concerning neurologic symptoms and unrelenting pain.
On examination, she was found to have measurable weakness in the right triceps and wrist, diminished reflexes, and loss of sensation.
She was diagnosed on MRI with a large C6-7 foraminal disc herniation resulting in right neural foraminal stenosis and pinching of her right C7 nerve root (radiculopathy)
She underwent an urgent Anterior Cervical Decompression and Fusion (ACDF) during which the herniated disc was removed and her nerve root was unpinched. Bone spurs were also removed and the height and alignment of her disc space was restored with a special titanium spacer and instrumentation.
After the patient underwent the Anterior Cervical Decompression and Fusion as an outpatient, she returned home the same day. She was able to return to her career, her clients, and being a mom!
